Royal Poinciana Flame Tree 15 Seeds - Delonix -Tropical
Sales rank: 9281
Delonix regia Family
Common Names: royal poinciana, flamboyant tree, flame tree, peacock flower.
A naturally occurring variety (var. flavida) has golden-yellow flowers.
15 Seeds
Delonix regia Family: Fabaceae/Leguminosae (bean family) Common Names: royal poinciana, flamboyant tree, flame tree, peacock flower.
Description
Royal poinciana (so named because it used to be in the genus, Poinciana) is a flamboyant tree in flower - some say the world's most colorful tree. For several weeks in spring and summer it is covered with exuberant clusters of flame-red flowers, 4-5" across. Even up close the individual flowers are striking: they have four spoon shaped spreading scarlet or orange-red petals about 3" long, and one upright slightly larger petal (the standard) which is marked with yellow and white. Royal poinciana gets 30-40' tall, but its elegant wide-spreading umbrella-like canopy can be wider than its height. Royal poinciana is deciduous in climates that have a marked dry season, but in Florida and other areas where the winter is not that much dryer than the summer, it is a semi-evergreen tree. Even the leaves are elegant: they are lacy and fernlike, twice-pinnate, and 12-20" long with 20-40 pairs of primary leaflets (pinnae), each divided into 10-20 pairs of secondary leaflets (pinules). The dark brown pods are flat and woody, up to 24" long and 2" wide. A naturally occurring variety (var. flavida) has golden-yellow flowers.
Location
Royal poinciana is native to Madagascar. It is widely cultivated and may be seen adorning avenues, parks and estates in tropical cities throughout the world. A casual visitor might think the Caribbean Islanders invented this tree they call simply "flamboyant." Poinciana frequently escapes cultivation and establishes in frost-free climates, including extreme southern Florida.

Cider Gum Eucalyptus Herb Plant - Eucalyptus gunnii
Sales rank: 8757
The starter plant you will receive is growing in a 3" pot.
Sun or part shade
Hardy in zones 7-10
Can also be grown as a patio plant, outdoors in the summer, indoors in the winter
Uses: Ornamental plantings, hedges or windbreaks, shade trees, firewood, cut flowers, foliage and fruits, frost-resistant plant
Eucalyptus is an enormous and fascinating genus. It comprises over 700 species, and accounts for more than two-thirds of Australia's vegetation. It is unfortunate that they are frequently regarded as not being reliably hardy outside of the subtropics, because it discourages people from planting them in cooler areas. There are many reasons to plant a eucalyptus--to begin with, they help to control aphids and other insects, most of them will grow rapidly, even in poor soil (12' per year is not out of the question), and most of them are very attractive--eucalyptus have a beauty all their own. And eucalyptus foliage, which shows incredible variety, is excellent for cut foliage in floral arrangements.
Unless it is to be grown as a pot plant for its entire life (more on that below), a eucalyptus seedling must be planted as soon as possible, before too many roots reach the edges and bottom of its pot. Eucalyptus ought to be planted when they are no more than 8 - 14 inches in height.
This tree is a native of Australia, but nowadays it is popular in European and American ornamental gardens. The foliage has an attractive silvery-bluish colour and a fine, aromatic fragrance which keeps gnats at bay. Growth is extremely rapid.
Culture: Sun or part shade. Hardy in zones 7-10. Can also be grown as a patio plant, outdoors in the summer, indoors in the winter.
Uses: Ornamental plantings, hedges or windbreaks, shade trees, firewood, cut flowers, foliage and fruits, frost-resistant plant. Definitely one you should have!

Eucalyptus globulus - Floral Emblem of Tasmania
The flower of this giant forest tree is the floral emblem of Tasmania. This eucalyptus gets its name form the colour of the juvenile leaves, which are a distinct glaucous blue, and the blue foliage of the young tree presents a very attractive sight.
It is a fast growing very large tree, and can grow up to 25 feet in less than 3 years. Very large trees with a wide girth like the specimen in the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens can be over 200 years old, and are beautiful when full of a mass of the creamy-white flowers. The plants respond well to coppicing, maintaining their juvenile foliage with the fresh young growth. When mature their leaves are similar to most other eucalyptus.

Balsa Wood Tree 10 Seeds - Ochroma pyramidale
Sales rank: 50274
Tropical tree to 90'
Large 6" white flowers
One of the fastest growing trees known to man.
10 Seeds
Tropical tree to 90', fast growing, trunk smooth - usually buttressed, large 6" white flowers, with the leaves ovate to nearly circular 1' across. One of the lightest and strongest of all commercial woods. Pound for pound stronger than oak.
Native to the tropical regions of South America, the balsa, or corkwood, tree is noted for its extremely lightweight wood. The word balsa is Spanish for float or raft. Spanish explorers found the natives of the New World using the wood for rafts. Balsa trees have large, ivory-colored flowers and large, heart-shaped leaves that fall off every year. Balsa seeds sprout quickly, and young trees may grow 12 feet in their first six months. In ten years they may be as tall as 90 feet and as much as 3 feet in diameter. Well-seasoned balsa is the lightest wood known, only half as heavy as cork. A cubic foot of balsa wood weighs only 6 to 8 pounds. There are many air spaces within it, helping to make the wood good insulation against heat, cold, vibration, and electricity. Balsa wood has many commercial uses. Because of its insulating properties, it is used for lining incubators, refrigerators, and cold-storage rooms as well as for soundproofing airplanes. It has long been used in making model airplanes and other toys.
A handsome specimen for sunny tropical climates. Makes a great house plant or even a bonsai. Indoors needs lots of sun. One of the fastest growing trees known to man. |
