Appalachian Stomp: Bluegrass Classics
Release Date: 1995-02-28
Sales rank: 5311
Appalachian Stomp is an ideal starter disc for those just beginning to explore bluegrass. Mostly this is because its 18 selections are so immediately accessible. The "classics" here, in other words, are usually those infrequent bluegrass cuts to have gained radio recognition beyond a core bluegrass audience. That explains why along with timeless standards such as Flatt & Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and the Osborne Brothers' "Rocky Top" we also get "Dueling Banjos" from the film Deliverance, a cut that is to classic bluegrass what Walter Murphy is to Beethoven. There are less immediately obvious choices too, though. If your previous exposure to bluegrass doesn't go beyond the Holy Trinity of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers--for example, if you've never heard J.D. Crowe & the New South's stellar example of progressive bluegrass, "Old Home Place," or experienced Jimmy Martin lay down the law on his rousing "You Don't Know My Mind"--then you're in for a high-lonesome surprise. --David Cantwell |

Smokey Joe's Cafe: Songs of Leiber & Stoller
Release Date: 2007-01-16
Sales rank: 10517
The final performance of Smokey Joe's Cafe: The Songs of Leiber and Stollers, the longest-running musical revue in Broadway history, was recorded live at Broadway's Virginia Theatre featuring the original Tony Award-nominated cast in a non-stop celebration of more than 40 songs that provided the soundtrack to the lives of a generation of Americans. Incredibly, they were all the work of a single songwriting team, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, whose extraordinary list of hits includings "Jailhouse Rock," "Hound Dog," "Treat Me Nice," "Stand by Me," "Spanish Harlem," and appropriately, "On Broadway."You know that rock & roll has staying power when it can survive even the homogenization that comes from being performed on Broadway. So it is with this live performance of a Broadway revue that celebrated the music of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, one of the finest songwriting teams ever to have hits with Elvis Presley, Ben E. King, the Drifters, the Coasters, and everyone else who mattered in the early days of rock. Everything from "Hound Dog" to "Charlie Brown," from "I'm a Woman" to "On Broadway" is included in this video recording of the Broadway hit. But despite energetic performances by a cast of five men and four women, there's little of the raw and plenty of the preprocessed in a show that wouldn't be out of place in a Las Vegas showroom. They're still great songs--and even these slick performances can't diminish that. --Marshall Fine |

The Doo Wop Box
Release Date: 1994-05-17
Sales rank: 40089
Born on street corners, doo wop came to symbolize a lush vision of idyllic teen romance. This comprehensive survey of doo wop music contains 101 vocal group gems and spans three decades. Among the classic sides are \""Sh-Boom,\"" \""Earth Angel,\"" \""Come Go With Me,\"" \""16 Candles,\"" \""Stay\"" and \""Why Do Fools Fall in Love?\"" No Track Information Available Media Type: CD Artist: DOO WOP BOX Title: DOO WOP BOX Street Release Date: 05/17/1994 Domestic Genre: OLDIES COLLECTIONSThe unwritten rules for doo-wop groups were deceptively simple: name your group after a bird (the Wrens, the Flamingos) or a car (the Cadillacs, the El Dorados), practice your two-, three-, or four-part harmonies on a neighborhood street corner or in the back of a candy store, and sing songs about how much you love your baby. It might have seemed like an obvious formula, but getting it just right was never easy. When it worked, that formula created some of the most joyful and unforgettable music of the 20th century. From the Orioles ("It's Too Soon to Know") to Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers ("I Want You to Be My Girl"), this four-CD collection is without a doubt the definitive introduction to the rock & roll vocal music of the 1950s and early '60s. --Percy Keegan |
