Set of six glasses, designed for Burgundy wines

Glasses hold a generous 25-ounces

Non-lead crystal

Each glass stands 8-1/2 inches high with a sturdy base and graceful stem

As Featured in The Wall Street Journal's Wine Notes Section, July 2007 Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher's "everyday glass". Founded in 1521, Spiegelau is one of the oldest and most famous European manufacturers of fine crystal, located in the small town of Spiegelau in the heart of the Bavarian Forest. Being one of the most picturesque parts of Germany, this area has in recent times become as much a centre of tourism as well as a traditional center of glassmaking. Today, the Spiegelau brand has become synonymous with quality stemware, especially among the worlds leading sommeliers and wine connoisseurs. The machine-made Vino Grande Series is exceptionally beautiful and durable and is designed to enhance a wines flavor and bouquet. Each shape is specific to how the wine will aerate and how the bouquet will be delivered to your nose Dishwasher safe. Size: 8-1/2"H, 25 oz.Several years ago, an article in Wine Spectator magazine noted the importance of a high-quality glass for improving a wine's looks and enhancing its bouquet. However, the magazine lamented, many of the attributes that increase the beauty and value of the glass actually obscure the wine. Spiegelau's Vino Grande series is part of a connoisseur line designed specifically for wine lovers. The thin rim means less distraction from the taste and texture of the wine. Tap the glass gently with your fingernail and you'll hear the distinctive ping of fine crystal.

This glass, which measures 8-1/2 inches high, features a wide bowl and narrow rim ideal for Burgundy wines. Like all red-wine glasses, it should be filled only one-third of the way so the wine can be swirled to release its full flavor. These glasses are billed as dishwasher-safe and are sturdy enough for everyday use, as proven by their use in restaurants. Still, we'd recommend hand washing. --Irene Svete

Riedel Vinum Bordeaux Wine Glasses, Set of 6

Sales rank: 22153

Six glasses for young, full-bodied red wines

Glass design enhances taste of wines such as Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja

Machine-made, 24-percent lead crystal

Made in Bavaria by world's premier wine glass maker

8-7/8 inches tall; capacity of 21-1/2 ounces

What can we learn from a Riedel (rhymes with "needle") glass? That size matters, as does shape? That form following function has meaning for wine-lovers as well as designers? Or perhaps the deeper lesson that the contents of an outwardly "plain" glass may provide a more sensual, complex, and rewarding experience than those of a superficially beautiful one? The Austrian Riedel family has been involved with glass-making since 1756, but it was two centuries later that Claus Riedel conceptualized a glass made specifically to enhance the flavors and aromas of a designated wine. Through an involved process each style of glass is crafted to accentuate the strengths, while minimizing the weaknesses, of a particular spirit. This is done through changes in the size and shape of the bowl, the diameter of the opening and the cut and polished lip which directs the wine towards a specific area of the tongue. Small wonder Riedel stems are preferred by sommeliers and oenophiles world wide for their ability to transform the perception of a wine.Austria's Riedel is the world's premier manufacturer of wine glasses. Made of 24-percent lead crystal, the Vinum series of glasses are the first machine-made wine glasses to be developed uniquely for each type of wine. Since their introduction in 1986, these wine glasses have had a large influence on the wine culture.

The glasses in this set of six were specifically shaped to highlight the fruit in young, full-bodied red wines with high levels of tannin, such as Bordeaux, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja, and Tempranillo. The mouths of the Bordeaux glasses draw wine to the areas of the tongue that perceive sweetness, emphasizing the fruit and mellowing the acidity. The large bowls provide room for the wine's rich bouquet to unfold. Each glass stands 8-7/8 inches high and holds 21-1/2 ounces of wine. --Cristina Vaamonde

Small wonder Riedel stems are preferred by sommeliers and oenophiles world wide for their ability to transform the perception of a wine. When you first hear of the philosophy behind Austrian glassmaker Riedel and its Vinum line of machine-made full-crystal stemware, you can be forgiven for raising your eyebrows higher than prices of white Burgundy. The tongue is divided into four zones, each recognizing either sweetness, bitterness, saltiness, or acidity and that by matching the size and shape of the glass to specific wines, their sensory attributes can be enhanced? Fortunately, with the Riedel Vinum series Chardonnay glass, the company has put its Montrachet where its mouth is and come up with a design to please not only Chardophiles, but also fans of Chenin, Viognier, the Pinot brothers--Gris and Blanc--even noble rotters from Sauternes. A Pacific Northwest Chard tasted in both the Riedel and what was previously thought to be "the good crystal" revealed a balanced acidic brightness in the former and a sort of boozy flabbiness in the latter. With its medium-height bowl and tapered opening, the Vinum Chardonnay glass almost forces you to purse your lips, directing the wine to the mid-tongue's acid receptors and thereby balancing the wine's fruit and oak. --Tony Mason
