Announcing Public Scoping Meetings for New Merced River Plan

The National Park Service is embarking on a new Merced Wild and Scenic River Comprehensive Management Plan. A plan is an opportunity to develop and implement a vision for the future of the Merced River that integrates protection of river values with the appropriate management of visitor and park activities. The National Park Service is currently hosting a series of public scoping events. The park welcomes all ideas and concerns regarding this planning effort.

Dates for upcoming meetings are as follows:

  • Wednesday, May 16 in Mariposa from 4-8 pm at the Masonic Hall (5154 Jones Street)
  • Thursday, May 17 in San Francisco from 4-8 pm at Fort Mason, 1st Floor–Conference Room, Building 201 (Bay & Franklin Streets)
  • Wednesday, May 30 at the Yosemite National Park Open House from 1-5 pm in the Auditorium, Yosemite Valley Visitor Center

The National Park Service is asking for your input in its new planning efforts. Share your passion for the place by helping to shape its future. For more information on park plans and how you can stay involved, visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/yose/planning.

Announcing Public Scoping for the Tunnel View Overlook Rehabilitation Project

Public scoping for the Tunnel View Overlook Rehabilitation Project will begin in June 2007. The National Park Service will be hosting public open houses at the Oakhurst Community Center on June 26, 2007 from 4-7pm, and at the Yosemite National Park Open House on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 in the Auditorium at the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center from 1--5pm.

The Tunnel View scenic overlook is a historic site located adjacent to Wawona Road. The purpose of the Tunnel View Overlook Rehabilitation Project is to remedy traffic safety issues, to correct drainage deficiencies, to provide clear circulation patterns for pedestrians and vehicles, to enhance and maintain viewing opportunities, to provide accessibility to viewing areas for visitors with disabilities, to correct safety problems associated with the Inspiration Point trailhead, and to address sanitation issues, while maintaining the naturalistic, rustic character and integrity of this historic site. Design and the Environmental Assessment will occur throughout the rest of 2007. Construction is expected to occur 2008.
