You can have any logical resolution on any physical device, just upscaled looks blurry.

Is this a "real" HDMI connection or over some DVI converter?
Eventually you can configure the resolution announcements in the TV?
If it has > 1 HDMI outputs, did you try them all?
try get-edid / parse-edid to know what it announces.
