Need X11R7.6?

My o.s. is Ubuntu 11.10 and its on an IBM deskset.   I saw in the logs 
that I should check out pixmaps online.  I did that and there was a 
suggestion to upgrade to X11R7.6.  How do I know if that is for me and 
my machine?  What is the process of installation?  I have some technical 
experience but am missing some knowledge.  I hope you can help.
