The main thing helping Xorg is not the license. It's that it has an
active developer community. The license is pretty much secondary to
that. FreeBSD and OpenBSD are hardly in danger of dying because of
their wide-open license - they have active developer communities.
(NetBSD I read the reports of that it was less so, but that's not
because of the license.)

You can proprietise your version of Xorg, but that wins you very
little - the main tree goes on without you. You benefit by giving back
to the project, even without a copyleft license requiring it of you.

Xorg has an active developer community, so it's the place to go for X.
There's no reason to fix what isn't broken.
