GTK+ 2.13.7/xrandr apps crash with BadImplementation on remote X server

When I run GTK+ 2.13.7 X client apps or simply xrandr in an ssh -X 
connection from my Debian Lenny (x server 1.4.2) PPC box to a Mandriva 
2009.0 Cooker i586 or x86_64 box, the applications crash with this error:

he error was 'BadImplementation (server does not implement operation)'.

Would this indeed be a problem with Debian's X server? Or rather in 
Mandriva's libx11? KDE applications do not suffer this problem.
