Porting drivers from xfree86 4.3.0.1

As I have not found a solution to my G200MMS issues I would
like to take a shot at porting the working drivers from
Xfree86 4.3.0.1 to a recent version of xorg.

Can someone point me to any documentation that will be a
good starting point for someone that has never dealt with
video drivers before?
