It won't work. The "intel" driver needs X11R7.3 or later because of the
reliance on XRandR 1.2.

That's exactly what happens and how it works. The i810 driver uses
Xinerama for extended desktop, whereas XRandR 1.2 no longer requires
Xinerama to achieve extended desktop.

You can't just change the driver - again it won't work. The "intel"
driver expects X11R7.3.

For X11R7.1 uses i810 and Xinerama - plain and simple.
