Or, perhaps even better a git managed file in Xserver containing only 
the git SHA1 id of a mesa git revision
known to work with that revision of Xserver.

That could even be used to optionally check or check out the correct 
revision of mesa working,
as well as providing a history of working mesa revisions for old Xserver 
checkouts.
