I don't even see how it could be dolt:
checking dependency style of gcc... (cached) none
checking dependency style of gcc... (cached) gcc3
[...]
checking dependency style of $(CC)... (cached) none

This is what causes it to fall back to using depcomp instead of gcc, and
for some reason $(LTCOMPILE) is empty. Ten points for the person who
can explain to me why this is, bearing in mind that LTCOMPILE is only
modified in the if $dolt_supported case, which is plainly not true here.

Chris, any chance you could please tar up the entire build tree
(configure scripts, Makefiles, everything) and put it somewhere for me
to poke at?

Cheers,
Daniel
