Help XServer Crash??

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Hi,

I was attempting to upgrade Xfree86 from version 4.2.0 to 4.5.0. I was using the Xinstall.sh script as suggested by the installation documentation.

Everything went find as for the installation is concerned, however when I try to configure the server using “XFree86 –autoconfig”, I get:

Fatal server error:

Server is already active for display 0

If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock

        and start again.

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send

the full server output, not just the last messages.

Please report problems to xfree86@xxxxxxxxxxxx

I’ve tried to remove the /tmp/.X0-lock file and re-running but I still get a whole host of errors.

^^^^^^^^^

This error just keeps repeating!!

I’ve looked at the installation log to try to rectify the situation. As I had previously, answered “yes” to all the questions from the Xinstall.sh script. I decided to restore the critical xdm and xinit configuration files in case it would help. But to no avail.

I’ve attached my XF86Config and XFree96.0.log files. I’m running Redhat 8 version 2.4.18-14 with a S3 Savage 4 video card and running version 4.5.0 of XFree86.

Please help is possible. Thank you!!

Best Regards,
