xlsfont says KDrive can't see scalable fonts in fonts.dir

According to xlsfont, KDrive does not see my scalable
fonts listed in the fonts.dir file.

I'm trying to figure out how to make KDrive/TinyX use
Microsoft's free TrueType fonts. I do not believe it
is using them because when I run xlsfont, only my
bitmapped fonts are listed - while my fonts.dir has
the MS verdana font entries at the bottom of the file.
 Also, when I run the 'font' sample application that
comes with wxWindows 2.4.0, it can see only the
bitmapped fonts in fonts.dir.

I think KDrive/TinyX (Xvesa) is ignoring my scalable
font entries in fonts.dir.

========================================

Here are the steps I have done:

1) Downloaded the XFree86-4.5.0-src-[1..7].tgz files

2) Unzipped them

3) Copied \config\cf\xf86site.def to
\config\cc\host.def

4) Edited the host.def as follows:

  #define DefaultFontPath built-ins,\
  /home/jimbob/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,\
  /home/jimbob/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,\
  /home/jimbob/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi

  #define RgbPath /home/jimbob/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb

  #define KDriveXServer YES
  #define TinyXServer YES
  #define XvesaServer YES
  #define BuildType1 YES
  #define BuildFreeType YES

5) Downloaded and extracted the free Microsoft Core
True Type fonts, decided to use the 'verdana' font

6) Created a font.scale file with verdana.tff in the
/misc/ directory, then had that added to fonts.dir via
mkfontdir, using these commands:

  ttmkfdir > fonts.scale
  mkfontdir

7) Verified the verdana fonts were added to fonts.dir
(14 TTF entries were added). Here is the last bitmap
and first TTF font in fonts.dir:

   9x15-KOI8-R.pcf.gz
-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--15-140-75-75-c-90-koi8-r
   verdana.ttf
-microsoft-Verdana-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-ascii-0

8) Used the xlsfont program for X, and captured it's
output - which had fixed fonts but no verdana in the
output.

9) Use the wxWindows-2.4.0 'font' app to browse the
available fonts, which had fixed fonts but no verdana.

10) My linux build machine is Redhat 7.3, and the
PC-based device I am running this on uses a Redhat 7.3
kernel (with a custom OS layout due to the RPL
booting)

========================================

Anyone spot any reason why TTF fonts would not be
recognized by KDrive?
