server Authorization dir (doemon / ServerAuthDir)

Hi all,

i'm using :
----------------
OS - redhat Linux 9
   - KDE 
 
I get following errors at boot time :
-----------------------------------------
server Authorization dir (doemon / ServerAuthDir)
is set to /var/gdm is NOT owned by user gdm & 
group gdm.
  Please correct the ownership or gdm configuration
/etc/X11/gdm.conf and RESTART gdm

Query : HOW TO DO IT .......????

-----------------------------------

At present i start by : startx (at root)
and facing more error as :

- Fatal server error :
  lockup

- server crash !! (may be..)

-  I viewed : /var/log/XFree86.0.log
found :
        (II) I810(0): direct rendering: Failed


- Xinit : connection to X server lost
  Hangup
  GOT SIGNUP
  startkde : shutting down...........
-------------------------------------------------

WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW  ??????????????????
