That is odd. In an earlier message you said that you have an Nvidia card. Did you ever install the Nvidia drivers (the ones from their website)? It sounds like you may be using some of their files (server-side glx module) but not using their 2D driver ("nvidia" vs. "nv"). Other than that, I don't know what could be causing the behavior you are seeing. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :(
