Also, fork is avoided. Give back the code is the price to pay to reused GPL code. That's how this system want to work. There is no GPL user that could say "i had produice more code than i use". So in fact, you're gas pedal example is void. BSD is an other approch. They beleive that people are "smart" enought to give back improvement. I just see that GPL code is much more common and wide spread than BSD like code.
