The person in charge of maintaining the XFree86-included version of FreeType (ie. the committer that looks after it) shouldn't accept any patches for the XFree86-specific version but instead redirect them upstream and later pick them up from there. In fact this should be the procedure for all packages shipped in 'extras'. Another example where this doesn't get obeyed (and it's partly my fault) is x86emu.
