Get the drivers out the core | |

One of the big points of discussion has been the length of time taken for ATI's drivers to get into an XFree86 release. One of the rebuttals to this is that there is a binary API for XFree86 drivers. (Think NVidia.) Get the drivers out of the core. Create an xfree86-drivers module/project that releases frequently without people groaning thinking, "oh no, I have to re-compile/install X again." ATI and others want their drivers included in the core because that is the standard. Set the standard to something more maintainable then you'll solve a big problem without having to alter the current governance. On the governance issue; I don't think people have a problem with the BOD as such, I think the problem is that there is no level underneath the BOD to deal with patches/development. Being an active developer != being on the BOD, but there seems to be no reasonable avenue for bringing in active developers to help with project maintainence. I know people will be sick of comparisons, but it seems that XFree86 really misses something similar to the Linux kernel development environment where a large web of people catch the patches and filter them through so that only the good ones reach Linus at the top of the tree. "There's only a few of us doing this in our spare time" doesn't wash when it appears nothing is done to encourage people to join the active development team. -- ______________________________________________ http://www.linuxmail.org/ Now with e-mail forwarding for only US$5.95/yr Powered by Outblaze _______________________________________________ Forum mailing list Forum@XFree86.Org http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/forum
