Hi,

Is there a way to run X in a "minimum mode" that gets rid of any
window-manager, but still allows me to run opengl-based apps? If there is
such a configuration, how is it obtained?

The Mesa project ( http://www.mesa3d.org ) has a mini-GLX on FBDev interface for running a bare bones OpenGL application without a windowing system.
