The difference between XFree86 and the kernel is that projects like
the video players, DirectFB, and Fresco, would benefit from drivers that
did not rely on an X server, so I see build separation as having
benefits for beginning on this goal as well.
In theory, opening up the driver API to other projects would cause more
people to work on those drivers. There were complaints that X team
didn't have enough people to review the work in a timely fashion? This
would add more parties interested in maintaining the code.
If any one is sceptical about whether the lesser windowing system
contenders are interested, I suggest that you ask them. I expect the
response will be a resounding "yes."
