In theory, opening up the driver API to other projects would cause more people to work on those drivers. There were complaints that X team didn't have enough people to review the work in a timely fashion? This would add more parties interested in maintaining the code.


If any one is sceptical about whether the lesser windowing system contenders are interested, I suggest that you ask them. I expect the response will be a resounding "yes."
