   Yes, we should put this in a faq or something.  The render
extension preallocates a large chunk of the default colormap
in depth 8 in 4.2.0 (maybe in 4.2.1 too, I don't know).  This
behavior was removed in XFree86 CVS.

   You mentioned you were using the "nvidia" driver.  If so,
you can add the option "NoRenderExtension" to the XF86Config file
to disable the render extension.  This option is only supported
by the "nvidia" driver.  For other drivers you'll need to use
XFree86 CVS (or maybe 4.2.1 if the fix made it in there).
