Compilation problem "commands commence before first target"

"make World" complained about "commands commence before first target."
when I tried to compile from source to try out the i845g support.  The
source was checkout from cvs last night.  Platform is Redhat 8.0 running
under Dell Dimension 2350.  Any suggestion, or solution to the
compilation error message.  Thanks.
