Easy newbie question: can't start xserver

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

All,

Just installed RedHat 8.0 with the graphical install option, and at the completion of the
install, the default config does not start xserver on my box. I did have RedHat 7.0
running on the h/w before I installed a fresh (clean) RH 8.0.

Looks like XFree86 4.2.0 comes in the package, and there seems to be a driver loading
issue, but I can't figure it out. I checked the docs on xfree86.org to ensure that the
correct driver was being loaded, and it seemed correct (s3 for S3 Trio64V2). I have seen
some answers to problems with my video card in newsgroups, and have made the adjustments
(change Driver to s3virge, etc.). I've also tried the "XFree86 -configure;XFree86
-xf86config /root/XFree*.new" route, but I don't seem to be able to get this to work.
Typically, I get a blank (black) screen, and I have to cold restart the sucker because I
don't know how to fix it.

Another symtom is that my mouse sometimes acts flaky during bootup....during the RedHat
install, I lost control of the mouse about 1/2 through the install, and had to navigate
the graphical install with Alt+hot keys. I see the pointer of the mouse, but it stays in
the upper right corner of the screen...it will allow me to move it, but it jumps
non-deterministically in wild directions, and than races for the upper left corner as
soon as I quit moving it...

Any help is appreciated. I really don't know what info to give, so I'll attach my error
log, and config file. Pls be patient...if I'm not giving enough info, it's out of
ignorance, not laziness...

TIA,
MKB
