Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to a session at Fall AGU on Pyroclastic Density Currents:

V051. Transport, Sedimentation, and Dynamics of Pyroclastic Density Currents

"Pyroclastic Density Currents (PDCs) are complex multiphase mixtures of particles and gas. These currents can transport and deposit volcanic material over many 10s of km, surmount large topographic barriers, cross bodies of water, and inject enormous masses of ash and aerosols into the stratosphere. Different processes can generate PDCs, such as collapse of eruption columns or lava domes. The dynamic regimes within currents are diverse and can range from those dominated by particle-particle interactions (even granular flow) to dilute, turbulent suspensions. We seek submissions that discuss the multiphase dynamics of PDCs, controls on their behavior, and how they transport and sediment particles."

We hope for presentations that investigate PDCs with a variety of techniques including field observations, deposit and stratigraphic analysis, analog experiments, and numerical modeling.  Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about the session.

Ben Andrews (Smithsonian Institution)
