Two Tenure-Track Faculty Positions, Assistant Researcher and Associate Researcher Levels. The Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP), School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, intends to further invigorate its expertise in geophysical research and technology development. To accomplish this goal, HIGP seeks applications for two full-time, tenure-track faculty members one at the Assistant (R3) level (position no. 82625) and the other at the Associate (R4) Researcher level (position no. 86021) in two of the following fields: high pressure mineral physics, marine remote sensing, small satellite development and utilization, geodynamics, or laser-Raman research. The successful applicants will join a vigorous, entrepreneurial research institute with an international reputation in geophysics and planetary science. We seek the two best geophysical researchers with strong interests and experience in such fields as high-pressure mineral physics techniques; combined laser-Raman, laser-induced native fluorescence (LINF) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) research applied to planetary exploration; marine volcanology/geodesy or ocean floor geophysical processes; orbital radar interferometry applied to the Solid Earth; and the design and application of innovative engineering technologies to geophysical observations from space using small satellites. Each successful candidate will be expected to build a vibrant research program supported by extramural funds. Other duties and responsibilities include teaching courses in his/her area of specialty as well as mentoring graduate students and post-docs. The level of State support for each position will be equivalent to nine (9) months per year, with the remaining three (3) months to be raised through extramural funds. Minimum qualifications: A Ph.D. in a field of geophysics, planetary science or closely related field received no later than May 31st, 2012; a demonstrated history for publishing in peer-reviewed journals; ability to generate independent research reports, publications and grant proposals; ability to interact effectively with students and/or assistants when appropriate; and the demonstrated capability/experience and desire to contribute to teaching and mentoring students. Additional minimum qualifications for Associate rank: At least four years of experience at the Assistant rank (or equivalent), a strong publication record, and the demonstrated ability to generate external Federal funding through peer-reviewed proposals. Desirable qualifications for both positions: Expertise in building and using instrumentation for geophysical and/or planetary research.
The anticipated starting date for the positions is August 1st, 2012, or as soon thereafter as possible. Review of applications will begin on May 7th, 2012 and will continue until the positions are filled. To apply, submit application, including (a) a statement of interest in the position, identifying which of the specialized positions you are applying for; (b) current CV; (c) transcripts (copies acceptable with application, official transcripts required upon hire) and (d) the names and email addresses of four people from whom references could be requested, to: Dr. Sarah Fagents, Chair HIGP Search Committee, 1680 East-West Road, POST 602, Honolulu, HI 96822. Email: fagents@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Electronic submissions are preferred. The University of Hawai‘i is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution.
