MIAVITA scenario builder tool: design of specifications using Mount Cameroon data
As part of the project MIAVITA, a preliminary work aimed to develop a
risk-scenarios-builder tool for volcanic scenario was conducted in
spring 2011 (Engineering internship of Carolina Quinet BRGM). The
objective of this work was to define the specifications of such a tool
in a general context and then to submit an application through three
pre-defined scenarios of eruption at Mount Cameroon… [Read More]<http://miavita.brgm.fr/pressroom/Pages/MIAVITAscenariobuildertool.aspx>
The MIAVITA socio-economic vulnerability study on Mount Cameroon Region
As part of the project MIAVITA, a socio-economic vulnerability study on
the Mount Cameroon Region of South West Cameroon has started in spring
2011, in risk zones mapped in the framework of ‘Gestion des Risques
Naturels et Protection Civile (GRINP)’ project. The major expected
outcome of the study consists in designing the appropriate models to
provide the best information about the Mount Cameroon natural risks to
local communities, organized planning and prevention tools to help the
local population to better perceive the risks and collaborate with the
local and government authorities in managing them… [Read More]<http://miavita.brgm.fr/pressroom/Pages/socio-economicvulnerabilitystudy.aspx>
The communication system operating in Mount Cameroon area
The communication system operating in the Mount Cameroon area was
analysed in details in order to improve the strategic planning and
coordination of the communication among stakeholders during disaster
outbreaks. Reducing rumour mongering/alarmist-information and increasing
stakeholders’ credibility in disaster management/monitoring is
fundamental for a better volcanic crisis response… [Read More]<http://miavita.brgm.fr/pressroom/Pages/communicationsystemMountCameroon.aspx>
A small Corner Reflector Network for Fogo Volcano
In order to calibrate and validate the data from Synthetic Aperture
Radar Interferometry (InSAR) analysis, a small network of Conner
Reflectors will be set up on Fogo volcano. The three CRs have been
purposely designed and realised for MIA-VITA project. They are trihedral
shape type, in perforated aluminium and can be used for C-band (e.g.
ENVISAT or future SENTINEL mission) and X-band SAR sensors (like
COSMO-SkyMed system).
Three locations for the CRs installation have been identified on Fogo:
two inside the Fogo caldera, close to the village of Chã das Caldeiras,
and one close to the village of Achada Furna. The fieldwork campaign to
set up the network is planned on the last week of September 2011… [Read

The MIA-VITA Monitoring Seismic Network of Fogo Volcano - Cape Verde - is operational since April 2011
A seismic network was installed at Fogo Island (Cape Verde Archipelago)
on April 2011, as part of WP3 (i.e., Work Package 3: Monitoring of
targeted active volcanoes) of MIA-VITA project. The network installation
has been carried out for monitoring proposes and eruptions forecasting.
In fact, in order to reduce the risk related to an active volcano and
to have a faster civil protection response, it is fundamental to have
good seismic data which record the state of volcano activity. At Fogo
Island the volcanic risk is mainly caused by lavas flows, ash falls and
ejection of ballistic bombs and it is particularly high especially for
the population living inside the caldera (Cha das Caldeira), very close
to the main vents. The data recorded by this seismic network are
broadcasted by the Internet and can be retrieved by a Local or Remote
Seismic Lab… [Read More]<http://miavita.brgm.fr/pressroom/Pages/monitoringseismicnetworkfogovolcano.aspx>
MIA-VITA is a 48-months project financed by the European Commission
under the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological
Development, Area “Environment”. The project has been designed to
address multidisciplinary aspects of volcanic threat assessment and
management in the International Cooperation Partner Countries (ICPCs),
from prevention to crisis management.
MIA-VITA team gathers civil defence agencies, national geological and
volcanological surveys, scientific teams (earth sciences, social
sciences, building, soil, agriculture, information technologies (IT) and
telecommunications) and an (IT) private company. It involves partners
from both Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal and United
Kingdom) and the ICPCs Countries (Cameroon, Cape Verde, Indonesia,
Philippines), where the target sites volcanoes are located (Mt.
Cameroon, Fogo, Merapi and Kanlaon volcanoes respectively). www.miavita.brgm.fr<http://miavita.brgm.fr/default.aspx>
MIA-VITA project aims to develop and deliver useful products for the
participating ICPCs and for all the other ICPCs countries affected by
similar volcanic risk.
