If it was the switch, it sounds like you had some safeguard feature turned on. I've been bitching about non auto-mdx switches for half an hour at some data center until it hit me that I turned on bpdu-guard, and turned off stp (which means it will shut the port immediately after it thinks it sees another switch). Fortunately nobody was there with clue enough to realise what a fool I was making of myself :-).
