stripes in overlay mode

hello,
Does anyone knows what could cause stripes in overlay mode. They sort of look like matrix screensaver, in that it is narrow vertical strieps that are slowly flowing/moving down the streen. They do now show up in grab display nor jpeg screen save. They don't appear immediatelly but rather after some days of use. Reloading the driver (bttv) does not fix the problem, but rebooting does fix it. Any ideas?

that's using xawtv-3.90.
