There are now rpms available for v4l here:
http://atrpms.net/dist/fc3/video4linux-20050113-172233/ for instance.
If I install in the following way...
# apt-get install video4linux-kmdl-$KVER
# apt-get install video4linux
# apt-get install cx88-kmdl-$KVER
# apt-get install cx88

Does this mean I can use a cx88 based card without recompiling the kernel?
Surely this would make sense as all I want to do is update some modules?
I thought it would but no...
#dmesg
cx88_dvb: disagrees about version of symbol mt352_attach
cx88_dvb: Unknown symbol mt352_attach

I'm no expert, but when I compiled my own kernel and snapshots, I still had to verify that the correct modules were loading. Make sure that the modules from the rpms are being loaded instead of the original ones in the kernel. I believe Axel usually uses an /updates/ directory for his modules. lsmod and modinfo will be your tools for doing this (at least thats how I did it). You can also use a script that checks for module duplicates and deletes or renames the overlapping ones in the kernel (email me directly if you want a copy - I got it from someone on this list).

So where does the problem lie? In the precomiled code or my implementation?

Thanks for your time,
