I'm happy to say that I've had sound for almost 5 days now! I've had just 
one incident last night where a recording had white noise, but the next 
one was fine again all by itself, without the need for me to re-modprobe 
the module again.

It was the "v4lctl -v 1 -c /dev/video0 setnorm PAL-BG" that did the trick.

So now I can sort of gradually begin to trust my mythtv-box to record 
programs, *with* sound, unsupervised. At least 90% of the time. Yay!
