Thanks for the response. I'm getting the audio problem with three 
different types of audio devices: intel8x0, ens1371 and usb-audio. I've 
got the output sound going into the mic-in jack of the audio devices... 
I'll give it a try with the line-in, though, and see if that helps any.

I should also mention that I tried arecord as well as ffmpeg and got the 
same shrill noise, so it is probably not recording program-dependant.
