Great!  I struggled with several problems to get this compiled (the
dvb headers were missing, the kernel source in Ubuntu isn't vanilla,
blah, blah) but eventually succeeded and I got glorious colour and
sound in xawtv.

Once.

Then, flushed with success, I tried to get MythTV working again and now
I seem to be back to square one.  But at least I know it works now...

I haven't tried any of these further suggestions yet, so I will when I
get another chance to experiment.
