Astrapix pc 200 webcam (Alfred)

Hi all,
        I am new to linux and trying to get a webcam going on my mandrake 10.1 
distro.  Could one of you kind folks point me in the right direction.  The 
chipset is a sonix sn9c102 and when I try to launch xawtv all I get is a 
black window.
This is the message that I get:
$ xawtv
