I'm trying to record tv using mencoder (i've tried mythtv and freevo,
but couldn't get them to work) and so far, i've made the most progress
from it...to the point where i get video and audio, but the video is
really crappy...it's all wrong (i've attached the file called tv.avi,
if you wanted to see what it looked like)

Well, the attachment isnt there, probably removed by the mailing list software. Can you describe the problem?

anyways, this is what my command line looks like

i'm not sure what this means:
v4l2: ioctl set format failed: Invalid argument

It means mencoder asked v4l2 for a format that is not supported by the driver. IIRC the format to use is YUV420P which would be i420 in the list below.

everything seems to be fine (minus some things i'm not sure about)

Can anyone possibly help me out on this? suggestions?
Also, the available outfmt= are 444p 422p 411p yuy2 uyvy yvu9 if09
yv12 i420 iyuv clpl hm12 y800 y8 nv12 nv21 bgr24 bgr32 bgr16 bgr15
bgr8 bgr4 bg4b bgr1 rgb24 rgb32 rgb16 rgb15 rgb8 rgb4 rg4b rgb1

yv12 is what was said was recommended when i tried some of the others
