Interesting. I'm messings with that, as it seems very trivial. I'm
building a /etc/X11/xawtvrc
Here's what I'm using:
[global]
freqtab = us-cable
[defaults]
input = television
norm = ntsc
audio = stereo
I did a v4lctl setchannel and then did a v4lctl list - it's setting the norm
to PAL-DK, which is interesting to say the least. It's not setting audio to
stereo either.
I fired up xawtv, and saw the same - However, it IS seting the freqtable to
us-cable, so it's at least getting that right.

I have mencoder installed. It will do this on an infinite loop:
v4l2: ioctl dequeue buffer failed: Input/output error, idx = 0
and then have to be killed off with extreme prejudice.
Wait, never mind, I'm an idiot. I forgot the v4lctl stuff.
If I do that, it works, without the audio - I can't figure out how to
specify an alternate input source w/ mencoder.
Anyways, I tried it again without the v4lctl stuff, just trying to specify
everything on the mencoder command line:
/opt/mplayer/bin/mencoder -tv
driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0:adevice=/dev/dsp0:amode=1:normid=1:chanlist=u
s-cable:width=640:height=480 tv://34 -ovc lavc -lavcopts
vcodec=wmv2:vbitrate=3000 -endpos 1:00 -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=128
-vop pp=lb -o test.avi
and I keep getting the same v4l2 error as above. Frustrating.
Now I'm trying streamer. Not much luck there. Of course, I still have to
set channel / norm / freqtable with v4lctl.
streamer -t 0:30 -o test.avi -n ntsc -F stereo
I can get video if I do v4lctl stuff first, but no audio.
I probably need to explicitly set the input to line2 somehow.
So I seem to be having some interesting results. Granted, I'm only
experienced with mp1e and mencoder, and much less so with mencoder.

Actually, mute turns on if I try to use streamer. Hrm. Let's check mp1e
real fast - Nope, it stayed off there.
I feel like there's a v4lctl gnome in my PC.

I tried zapping, but I'm having very little luck even getting TV video to
work, let along captions. It seems highly unstable on my system. I've
rebuilt a few times.
