Prescribed Fire Planned East of Tusayan
TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Fire managers are preparing to implement the 540-acre Scott Prescribed Fire on the Tusayan Ranger District later this week, weather permitting.
The project area is about ten miles east of Tusayan, starting near the Grandview Lookout Tower and extending five miles south and east, next to the Arizona Trail. Crews are using the Arizona Trail as a containment line on this burn block. Information signs will advise trail users to detour off the trail onto Forest Road 310 near the junction of roads 310 and 317 and to reconnect at the Lookout Tower. Please use caution if traveling in this area.
The National Weather Service predicts favorable conditions mid-week for this prescribed fire. If these conditions develop and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approves the request, burning may begin Wednesday or Thursday and last for two days. Coordination with the National Weather Service is ongoing. Crews expect smoke to travel northeast of the project area. Smoke will be noticeable for several days after the burn.
Fire crews will implement, monitor, and patrol the project to ensure it meets objectives outlined in the prescribed burn plan. Objectives of this burn include improving forest health, enhancing wildlife habitat, and returning fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem.
A map of the project is on the Inciweb at http://www.inciweb.org/incident/1878/ For more information, please contact Punky Moore (928-635-5653) or call the Fire Information Line at 982-635-8311.
