Williams Ranger District
Pile Burning
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National
Forest fire managers are preparing to burn slash piles Wednesday, January
5 on the Williams Ranger District. If appropriate conditions exist and
Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approves the request, firefighters
may ignite 78 acres of piles about five miles southeast of Williams near
Davenport Hill.
Fire personnel will monitor the
piles to ensure burn objectives are met. Additional piles may be burned
in this general vicinity later in the week.
Managers expect smoke to travel
southwest of the project and settle in low-lying areas overnight. Smoke
may be visible from Interstate 40, Williams, Woods Subdivision, and Dogtown
Lake. The recent snow will prevent fire from spreading to vegetation outside
the piles.
Piles are made of stacked tree
slash cut during thinning projects. Burning the piles returns important
nutrients to the soil, completing fire’s regenerative cycle. Thinning
and pile burning are part of an ongoing effort to improve forest health,
reduce fire hazard, and protect communities.
