Kaibab National Forest Prepares for Prescribed Burning
on Williams Ranger District

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – As a continuation
of the Kaibab National Forest prescribed fire program, fire specialists
are preparing for prescribed burning on the Williams Ranger District during
the week of May 3 thru May 7. Depending on environmental conditions and
Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approval, burning may occur
next week on the Northeast Freeway unit of the City Project.  

The project area covers 300 acres,
directly east of Williams, south of I-40, southwest of State Highway 64.
Personnel are evaluating the potential for igniting the unit depending
on fuel moisture and forecasted winds. Managers are looking for northwesterly
winds and good ventilation in order to implement the burn while minimizing
smoke impacts to town. Travelers are advised to exercise caution in the
area as personnel will be working along I-40.    

We understand that smoke created
while we conduct our prescribed burning projects impacts people in our
community.  We strive to keep community members informed of our fire
management plans and activities.  

Smoke may be present for several
