The limit should be bounded only by the amount of memory you have, and by
your ability to create /dev/ nodes to represent the drives (which are
emulated as SCSI drives).

There should be no "mounted" limit separate from the detectable limit.

I don't know that I would say "shared", as that implies other things to me.
But yes, a high-speed hub is required to support full-speed devices.
