Charging blackberry under linux

Sorry, not a subscriber to this list, but, replying to Bojan's post

about charging the Blackberry under Linux ...

I've discovered that my new BlackBerry 8700c will charge from my Linux
USB port if I turn the BlackBerry off. Naturally you can't use the phone
in this mode, but it is in the "soft off" position, where it wakes
itself up for the next alarm, so it can still be used as an alarm clock,
and will charge itself overnight in my hotel room while I sleep. The LED
indicator strobes yellow slowly, and when I turn it on later, it is
charged. It isn't even charging very slowly; it only takes an hour or
two to charge the phone fully.

Conjecture: the default current on the USB port is not sufficient to
both operate the BB and charge the battery, so the BB blocks charging
the battery. But, if it is turned off, it doesn't need current to run
the device, so it lets the battery charge.

Details:

    * Laptop: Thinkpad T40
    * Linux: SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, Linux 2.6.16.21-0.25-default

Something I tried that did *not* work was one of those strange dual USB
cables, where there is 2 standard USB connectors at one end, and one
mini-USB connector at the other end. This Y-cable came with a friend's
USB hard drive enclosure. Apparently 2 USB port's worth of power is not
enough either.
