occasional usb hangs | |

Greetings, I'm having some USB problems. I'm using BackupPC to perform system backups to an external hard drive (Maxtor L100P0) in a usb enclosure (with Cypress Semiconductor usb). A full back is approx 3,100,000 files totaling 65 GB (compressed to 31 GB) and takes 12 or so hours during which the USB drivers get a decent workout. The first part of this year running Mandriva kernels (2.6.14 and 2.6.15) all worked well. I switched to Gentoo several months ago. With its default 2.6.17-gentoo-r7 kernel, the USB subsystem would hang pretty much every time I ran a full backup. A few weeks ago I switched to the 2.6.18-gentoo-r1 kernel and backups have been working quite well, though not 100%, i.e. there's an occasional USB subsystem hang that requires a reboot to clear. I'll be glad to provide additional info if you'll let me know what you want/need.
