The federal Surface Transportation Board announced today that it granted
Grenada Railway LLC’s (Grenada) request to withdraw its proposal to abandon
the southern segment of its rail line near Grenada, Miss. The Board
accordingly canceled the public meeting the agency had scheduled for Nov.
16, 2011 in Winona, Miss. concerning the proposal, and discontinued the
proceeding.
On Sept. 20, 2011, Grenada had
petitioned the Board for permission
to abandon 81.3 miles of its rail
line between Grenada and Canton,
Miss., and on Sept. 29, 2011, the
Mississippi Transportation
Commission asked the Board to hold
a public hearing in Grenada. On
Oct. 25, 2011, the Board announced
that it would hold a public meeting
in Mississippi at a time and place
to be announced, and on Nov. 4,
2011, the agency scheduled the
meeting for Nov. 16, 2011 in Winona
to allow the public and
stakeholders an opportunity to
comment on Grenada’s proposal. On
Nov. 10, 2011, Grenada filed a
letter with the Board requesting
leave to withdraw its proposal.
