Umax Powerlook 2100XL

Hi,
I'm scanning 12" x 16" colour prints on a Umax Powerlook 2100XL scanner....
For the job in hand the quality is acceptable, but I am concerned about lack
of detail in the shadows... I'm comparing on-screen with the original print
and I can see details in the shadows that haven't made it to the scan.
The scanner has been calibrated and colour balanced using a 10 step
greyscale Gretag Macbeth target that came with the scanner. The monitor has
been calibrated with Optical 3.5.1 and Colourvision's Spyder.
I'm scanning in 16Bit and getting a very nice smooth histogram in 'Levels' :
there is no clipping at either end.
Apart from the lack of detail in the shadow area when compared with the
original print they appear nice scans.
Is there anything I am not doing right to get the max out of the shadow
areas, or am I at the limit of this scanner ?
Could anyone on the list suggest a good A3 scanner for Colour & B&W prints ?
Many thanks, David
