I wrote: "Should I use usb or firewire for a new Microtek 6700 scanner" on Win98? Several people answered with differing opinions. So I went back over everything carefully. Microtek supplied a firewire PCI board with the scanner as well as firewire and usb cables. I decided to try the firewire solution. What I found (as everyone mentioned) was that Win98 doesn't support firewire. According to Microtek, Win98SE *does*. So I upgraded to Win98SE and voila, my scanner is on the air. At whatever blazing speed firewire is capable of. Upgrading was a total pain in the brain but eventually, I cheated death and brought the system back to life. Thanks to all who responded. As far as the Epson 2450 goes, I have no idea as to whether it will work with '98SE or not. But the Microtek 6700 certainly does. Tom (slightly less foolish) Messenger - Turn off HTML mail features.
