i ended up doing this (color to gray scale) and no ice, but i am
disappointed as the slides look great but the scans do not.

Mehrdad... I recall problems  using ice and scala... recommend avoid that...
also try scan
as color... then convert to gray scale in photoshop and see how the results
are...
