Getting on board but which board?

OK. Now I've got a scanner.

Based on information on this list, I bought a Microtek Scanmaker 6700 for
my wife's birthday. She is taking classes in digital graphics and wanted
one. I flipped a coin and bought the 6700.


It comes with a USB cable as well as a FIREWIRE cable and FIREWIRE PCI
card. Which one to use???

Questions, questions. 

I'm on a Wintel system, Win 98, and I'm not sure if it's USB 1.1 or 2.0.
My guess is that I have USB 1.1 and that FIREWIRE will be much faster. 

Can anyone out there tell me how to verify this? 

First, how to tell if it's USB 1.1 or 2.0 and second, is FIREWIRE faster
than USB 2.0?

I'm fine with popping the box open and loading in another card and drivers
if need be. Just wondering if I need to.
