I got the new Adaptec's ASPI tool from Vuescan website, as Maris suggested, and 
that fixed the problem. The weird part is that Vuescan itself was supposed to need 
it on WIN2000, but it was working fine even without the layer.

Thanks again, back to scanning on the new machine. What a jump - from an AMD 
200MMX / 128MB to an AMD 1900 /1024MB  ;-)
