It would seem that they are stuck with providing - if not full USB 2.0
performance - at least performance that is significantly higher than USB 1.1
given the labeling which does indicate to me that they are claiming it to be
a true USB 2.0 peripheral. I also guess I have to retract my statement
about such peripherals not being available at present.

There, you made me grab the carton the scanner came in to see what it
says. The "USB 2.0 compatible" statement came with the Scanner Basics
booklet that came with the scanner.
On the end of the box, under Minimum System Requirements, is says
"-Available USB 2.0 connection and device drivers" and "-USB 2.0 compatible
operating system and applications (recommended for optimum
performance)" It also has an icon that says on it "Hi-Speed certified USB".
Further down on the box, under Product Specifications, it says:
"Computer Connection
- USB 2.0/IEEE 1394 (Firewire)"
On the front (and back) of the box, it says "USB 2.0 and Firewire
connectivity for Windows and Macintosh systems"
So, I'm thinking they're stuck with providing full USB 2.0 performance.
