Nikon 8000 fluid mount 120 glass carrier

First scans with my DIY glass carrier for fluid mounting shows a
very even sharpness for four 4.4x5.6 negatives. Measured with the
Nikon itself there is less than 7 units focal difference on the 4
extreme points of a 57 x 170 mm. A curly 6x9 negative had all the
grain sharp over the entire field. So far only
negatives. Have to check whether the glass shows much colour
shift with a positive. The negative looked a bit too light but no
abnormal colour shifts if compared to a scan without glass. The 7
units difference can be reduced to say 3 units as it seems that
the right side of the carrier is slightly higher than the left
side. Something that can be taken care with a piece of sandpaper
on a glass plate. Probably the normal tolerance but why not take
that out as well.

I based my DIY carrier on a FH-869M 120 slide carrier. Removed
all that is raised above the plane the slides lay on, made one
big rectangle window instead of the two (same start of the window
as the normal glassless carrier), made one code hole extra so the
scanner thinks it is the normal glassless 120 carrier (actually
made 3 extra to get five and taped the two other, one never knows
what other codes Nikon uses now or in the future). Filled the
rest of the surface with 5 mm thick black expanded pvc sheet
(Forex, Sintra). The glass is 2 mm float glass that I checked for
spots etc. Did that partly with the scanner itself with some filt
pen marks on the glass to get the focus. That is also how I
checked its planeness before the end assembly. Size of glass 115
x 285 mm. At the end I still have to add a strip of aluminium so
the mounting fluid will drip off on a cloth without touching the
ABS plastic the carrier is made off. Glued the glass with two
sided adhesive tape + one component polyurethane expanding glue'
the last is quite solvent resistant so it will not dissolve. I
also used that to cover the ABS walls of the carrier for the same
reason. Near the clamps there is some silicone glue to seal that
part.
Bended some metal strap strip to two small clamps to clamp the
transparant polyester foil on the glass
at one side only so I don't need tape that normally gives a mess.
When it is really finished I might put an image somewhere on the
net. It will not have more instructions than what is described
here. The ones that are handy do not need more, the other ones
will make a mess of it anyhow.
